Keeping Your Cool When Things Heat Up
Resolving Your Emotional Triggers

Staying calm in difficult moments can prevent many of the mental flare-ups that gradually corrode and damage our relationships—both at home, with friends and at work.

When our buttons get pressed, things can escalate quickly. Instead, we learn to meet our inner triggers and work with them. When painful feelings arise in the mind, we can raise an inner sign: “Don’t panic.” Rather than reacting immediately, we learn to patiently accept these feelings, experience them, and gently investigate where they come from.

We begin to discover that painful feelings are not simply caused by external situations, but arise from within our own mind. This Buddhist understanding of the mind helps us step out of unhealthy coping strategies.

“In reality, the painful feelings that arise on such occasions are not intolerable. They are only feelings (…) There is no need to take them so seriously.”
— “How to Solve Our Human Problems” by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Seen in this new light, our experience begins to feel lighter. When old wounds are activated, we can patiently accept what is there—softening instead of fighting, creating inner space—and from there, letting go of our triggers.

This series is inspired by the book “How to Solve Our Human Problems” by Buddhist master Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.
